The immigration issue has split into two paradigms; one from this country’s founding and one from a possible future. In broad terms, the former can be described as citizens from (fill in country of origin) immigrating to America to become Americans; the latter, citizens from (fill in country of origin) immigrating to America to be (fill in country of origin) living in America. Both enjoy the rights and benefits that America has to offer, but only one group fully assumes the responsibilities that come with those afore mentioned rights and benefits.
The first group, by the nature of its goal, must follow set rules and regulations to obtain that goal and the first step is legal immigration into the United States. The same is not necessarily true for the second group. Because citizenship is not the goal, legal immigration is not a requirement, only an option.
Now the question needs to be asked, to what group does the United States government owe a responsibility? The answer is the citizens of the United States and the path to citizenship does not begin with illegal immigration into the United States.
That was the easy part. What to do, not so easy.
